We counted every Lotto Max draw since 2009. The most-drawn numbers are 28 and 7 — but the 'coldest' numbers aren't cold at all. Here's the honest data.

Lotto Max is Canada's biggest lottery, and like every player you've probably wondered whether some numbers are luckier than others. So we counted. Across all 1,246 Lotto Max draws since the game launched in September 2009, here is exactly how often every number has been drawn — the hot, the cold, and one important catch that most 'lucky number' lists get completely wrong.

The 10 most-drawn Lotto Max numbers

Two numbers share the top spot: 28 and 7, each drawn 201 times. They're followed by 19 (200), 39 (194), 36 (193), then 22 and 2 (192 each), 30 (190), and 24 and 31 (187 each). For the live ranking that updates after every draw, see the Lotto Max stats page.

The least-drawn — and the catch with 50, 51 and 52

This is where almost every other site gets it wrong. At first glance the 'coldest' Lotto Max numbers look like 52 (drawn 3 times), 51 (4 times) and 50 (103 times). But those numbers aren't cold — they're new. Lotto Max launched in 2009 with numbers 1 to 49. It expanded to 1–50 on May 14, 2019, and only to 1–52 in April 2026. So number 50 has existed for about seven years, and 51 and 52 for only a few months. Comparing them to numbers that have been in the machine since 2009 is apples to oranges.

Once you compare only the numbers available the whole time (1 through 49), the genuinely least-drawn number is 49, at 151 appearances — followed by 33 (155), and 27 and 23 (157 each). That is the honest 'cold' list. Everything with a lower raw count is simply a younger number.

What 'most drawn' actually means over 1,246 draws

A little math puts the gaps in perspective. With 1,246 draws of 7 numbers each, and numbers 1–49 available throughout, each of those numbers 'should' average roughly 176 appearances. The real range runs from 151 (number 49) to 201 (numbers 28 and 7) — a spread of about 50. That sounds like a lot, but across tens of thousands of individual number draws it is exactly the natural clustering that pure chance produces. Flip a coin 1,246 times and you won't land on a perfect split either.

Will playing the hot numbers help you win? No.

Here is the part the 'hot number' sites bury: past frequency has zero predictive power. Every Lotto Max draw is an independent event. Since May 2019 the numbers have been picked by a certified random number generator, which has no memory of what came up last week or last decade. The fact that 28 has appeared 201 times and 49 only 151 tells you nothing about the next draw. If hot numbers actually worked, professional gamblers would have drained the lottery long ago. They haven't, because they can't.

The only real edge hiding in this data

There is one genuinely useful thing here, and it is not about winning — it is about not sharing. Players pile onto the same numbers: anything 1–31 (birthdays), the 'lucky' 7, and last week's winning set. Those combinations are played by far more people, so if one of them hits, the jackpot is split many ways. Picking less popular numbers won't improve your odds of winning, but it does improve your odds of being the sole winner if you do. That is the entire edge — payout, not probability.

Quick Lotto Max facts

Lotto Max draws happen every Tuesday and Friday. You pick 7 numbers from 1 to 52, and the jackpot odds are 1 in 33,294,800. Jackpots start at $10 million and climb to a $70 million cap, with extra Maxmillions $1 million draws once the main jackpot maxes out. And because Canadian lottery winnings are completely tax-free, the headline number is the cheque.

Curious whether your own set has ever come up? You can check any Lotto Max combination against all 1,246 draws on record in about ten seconds — the answer is almost always 'never drawn,' which is true of nearly every possible combination.
